Deepika Padukone CONFIRMS Playing Draupadi In Film On Mahabharata; Talks About Her Upcoming Projects
Deepika Padukone has confirmed that she will be playing Draupadi in her upcoming film. According to a report, Deepika Padukone’s Draupadi based on Mahabharata has been put on hold.
Deepika Padukone was last seen in her maiden production, Chhapaak, directed by filmmaker Meghna Gulzar. A few months before that, the actress announced that she will be partnering with Madhu Mantena to produce a film based on Mahabharata. The actress also confirmed and mentioned that she would be playing the role of Draupadi in the movie. According to another report, Padukone’s project based on Mahabharata is put on a hold. The report stated that the makers are planning to revive work on the ambitious project in a later time frame.
Deepika Padukone told Femina magazine, "It (Shakun Batra's film) is a relationship story that we haven’t seen in Indian cinema before. Then there is Pathan, an action film with Shah Rukh Khan, next is Nag Ashwin’s multilingual film with Prabhas. Then I am doing which is a remake of Anne Hathaway’s movie The Intern, which is so relevant in today’s times when you have the millennial and the older generation coming together. And then, the most famous story coming out of our country, Mahabharata, in which I am playing Draupadi; I want to tell that story to the world."
Meanwhile, a trade source shared some details about the project with Bollywood Hungama. The source said, “They announced the film because everyone was excited about bringing something as fascinating and iconic as Mahabharata on the big screen, however, over the last 2 years, they have not been able to lock on a director.” The report stated that the team explored several big names, but couldn’t align with the vision of any filmmaker. The source added, “One of the many directors in the race to direct Draupadi was Vishal Bharadwaj, but things fell through. After all these years, the buzz is, the film is finally put on hold for the time being and will be revived at a later time frame.”
The source spoke furthermore about the time the makers are planning to revive the film. And, said, “They are still keen to make it and will certainly revive it at the right time, on getting the right director. It’s an ambitious film, and requires a certain kind of command over the craft as bringing an epic to the screen is a big responsibility.”
Meanwhile, speaking of the film, it is based on a novel titled Palace of Illusions, narrated from Draupadi’s point of view. Deepika is currently busy working on Shakun Batra’s next film and also has The Intern in the pipeline. Work-wise, the actress also has Pathan with Shah Rukh Khan and John Abraham, Fighter with Hrithik Roshan, and a film with Prabhas in her kitty.
